Merry Monarch Festival 2009


 

The annual presentation of the Merrie Monarch Festival has led to a renaissance of the Hawaiian culture that is being passed on from generation to generation. The week-long festival includes art exhibits, craft fairs, demonstrations, performances, a parade that emphasizes the cultures of Hawaii, and a three-day hula competition that has received worldwide recognition for its historic and cultural significance.

The Merrie Monarch Festival will run from April 12-18, 2009.

The week-long festivities begin with a Ho’olaulea (music festival) at the Afook Chinen Civic Auditorium on April 12, 2009 and continues all week with free noon-day entertainment at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel and Naniloa Volcanoes Resort. On Wednesday, there is a free exhibition night at the Edith Kanaka’ole Tennis Stadium that begins at 6:30 p.m. Thursday is the solo Miss Aloha Hula Competition, Friday and Saturday are the group Kahiko (Ancient) and ‘Auana (Modern) hula competitions. The arts and crafts fair is held from Wednesday through Saturday at the Afook Chinen Civic Auditorium. The big Merrie Monarch Royal Parade winds through downtown Hilo at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Except for the hula competition, the events are free.

For the 2009 ticket request information, contact the Merrie Monarch Festival Office. You will need to mail in your request along with a money order or cashier’s check for tickets to the Merrie Monarch Festival Office no sooner than December 26, 2008. The festival committee will return any request received prior to Christmas. Ticket requests are filled in the order they are received. Should we be unable to honor your original request, please state whether or not an alternate seating section or General Admission would be acceptable. You can only purchase two sets of tickets. A set consists of two or three night’s admission for one person. If your group is larger than two people, please have your members send in their own ticket requests.

Battle of the Bands is here again!!!

 UHH Student Activities Council presents the UHH Underground: Battle of the Bands on Saturday, April 18th, 2009 from 5:00pm to 10:00pm on Campus Center Plaza. Any band with at least ONE UHH student can enter and possibly win merchandise from either musiciansfriend.com or guitarcenter.com. There are 9 slots open. Stop by the SAC office (Campus Center 307) and pick up an application packet. The entry forms are due on Wednesday, April 1st at 3:00pm. All applications turned in after the deadline will need to pay $15.00 to enter in the Battle of the Bands.

U2 Pumps Friday Nights at ‘Imiloa

Friday Nights keeps pumping with the U2 full dome digital planetarium show. You’ve heard the music, now see the music in this 43-minute full dome immersive experience to the popular bands music, thanks to the high-tech, full dome digital video and 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround sound capability of the `Imiloa Planetarium. See waves of rich computer renderings of colors, images, animations, and fractals that are choreographed with the band’s music. Shows are 7:30 and 9:00 pm each Friday with ticketing at $8 for members and $10 for non-members. * Note there will be no shows Friday, January 30th and Friday, February 6th due to planned maintenance of the planetarium.

France and Spain Education Tour

Organized by EF Educational Tours, a well known Educational Tour Operator, and lead by Kamila Dudley, an experienced world traveler and French Instructor, this summer students, staff and Hilo community members have the opportunity to participate in a 10 day or 13 day summer abroad program to France and Spain May 19 to 29.
